Seminar "Design Culture"
28.09. 10:00–16:00
At the seminar "Design Culture" the design specialists from different countries debate about understanding and development of design culture in society. How are aesthetics, ethic, business, semiotics, education, technological heritage and organisation culture connected to design culture? Is the well-designed organisation capable of creating products and services of high design value? Does design thinking facilitate understanding of design being holistic and human-centred, not just creating beautiful things? How much will commercial success be influenced and can efficiency be the only big end for the organisation? Emotions are as important as intellect; immeasurable things are as important as measurable. We try to find the human side in business.

The seminar "Design Culture" leads us to humanity in design and business.
Michael Thomson, a well-known design strategist, Jak Spencer, an expert of inclusive design and Oscar Tomico, a specialist on smart textiles show us the ways to improve the quality of life with the help of design. Christian Pagh from Denmark tells us how to vivify design culture in the context of organization. Kristian Keinänen, the president of Ornamo and Kristjan Mändmaa discuss about design education and design awareness. Jüri Kermik concentrates on plywood and furniture. Simo Heikkilä discusses about ebbing of hands-on abilities. Deborah Alden* from New York opens up the backgrounds of 21st century fashion industry. Thilo von Debschitz offers an interesting study to friends of graphic.
The seminar is moderated by Ilona Gurjanova and the panel discussion by Michael Thomson.

FORMFOLD by  Ester Soidla

FORMFOLD is an abstract approach to clothing. It is a new solution that looks beyond the boundaries and traditions of garment making. The inspiration comes from origami  folding techniques where one single flat form can be transformed into many different wearable items. The shape of the pattern makes it possible to make it in zero waste principle that eliminates the creation of fabric residues. It is a modern take on Japanese kimono.

TRENKAN, designer Aive Viin

Aive Viin, the creator of the brand Trenkan:

“Trenkan reflects me. I can be considered as one quite egoistic creative person because often the stories of my prototypes are created when I design for myself or for my husband. One kind of simplicity and complexity are combined in my clothes with each other.

Just the same way as my husband has described myself as well. Obviously, it’s natural that the creation reflects the creator.

As a designer I do not like to label my brand with one particular style or purpose. Rather than that, I hope that the person who likes Trenkan, will define its meaning on their own.

There is a dialogue of the masculinity and femininity between my clothes and the fabrics used. I have always enjoyed experimenting with the fabrics and the constructions. At the same time, I try to avoid the syndrome of an art piece.  I want that my creation would be not only a beautiful show but also one extraordinary commodity which will beautify and cover the person’s body who wears it.

The creation presented at the Tallinn Design Festival displays the energy of the brand. The aim of the products is to charm by their deepness and character. Seemingly simple creation offers an interesting show through the exciting details and technical approaches, if only you go into it”.
